Order custom when a measurement forces it: the wall or alcove will not take a standard width, a component will not fit a standard bay, or the layout you need (turntable, centre speaker, extra drawers) is not one of the standard editions. Order standard when the sizes already work, because a standard model is quicker to specify and already proven.
Every B&A console is built to order regardless, so a change to width or interior layout is a decision made before the build rather than a modification afterwards.
Situations where custom is the right call
- The opening is fixed. An alcove, a bay window, a chimney breast or a built-in wall unit dictates a width no catalogue size matches.
- A component will not fit a standard bay. An unusually tall amplifier, a deep power amplifier, or a stack that needs more clearance than a standard interior height allows.
- The layout is wrong for your system. You need a turntable shelf where a drawer is, or a centre-channel opening sized to a specific speaker, or more storage and fewer bays.
- Height has to match something. Seated eye line to a screen, or an existing run of furniture the console has to sit alongside.
- Wood or finish has to match other pieces in the room.
When a standard model is the better buy
If your components fit the published bay dimensions, your wall takes one of the standard widths, and one of the Shelf or Drawer editions matches how you use the cabinet, take the standard model. It is easier to specify, easier to compare, and there is nothing to get wrong in translation.
Check the published numbers first:

What to send with a custom enquiry
The quality of the answer you get depends almost entirely on this list:
- The space. Width, height and depth available, and anything in the way: skirting, radiators, sockets, a chimney breast.
- The equipment. Make and model of each component, with measured dimensions, especially the deepest and the tallest.
- The television or screen, if one sits on top: size and stand footprint.
- Speakers, if a centre channel has to live in the cabinet: its exact dimensions.
- Weight of anything heavy, so shelf placement is right the first time.
- Wood and finish preference, and anything it has to match.
- A photo of the room. It answers questions you would not think to ask.
How a B&A order runs
Order and delivery details are confirmed with you by phone or email before the order is accepted, because a built-to-order piece cannot be quietly corrected later. Build time is usually 6 to 8 weeks from receipt of deposit, longer in peak periods. The finished piece ships assembled and crated by LTL freight, and ground-level threshold delivery is included in the price. Some parts, such as door glass and adjustable shelves, are installed by you on arrival.
The full ordering, delivery and warranty terms are on the policies page.
Frequently asked
Can B&A build a custom-width media console?
Yes. Every console is built to order, so width, interior layout and shelf spacing are set before the build starts. Send the space dimensions and your component list with your enquiry.
How long does a custom media console take?
B&A publishes a lead time of usually 6 to 8 weeks from receipt of deposit to completion, which can be longer during peak periods. Freight transit after that typically runs 2 to 8 business days.
Can B&A size a console around my amplifier?
Yes, and that is the most useful information to send. Give the make, model and measured dimensions of your deepest and tallest components and Brian will size the bay to them.
Talk to the person who builds them
Send your component list and the space you have. Brian will tell you which console fits, or whether it needs to be built to a different size.
Figures on this page are B&A's own published specifications, taken from the current product pages and the ordering and warranty terms. Equipment clearances should always be taken from your own component manuals.
